Legislature Votes to Delay Primaries
Today, the North Carolina legislature voted to delay all primary elections. State Supreme Court oral arguments for the redistricting case (NC League of Conservation Voters v. Hall) are scheduled for February 2.
The North Carolina State Board of Elections has indicated finalized districts need to be in place by the week of February 14 in order to hold primary elections under the current schedule. Primary elections are currently scheduled for May 17.
The state Supreme Court adopted a very tight timeline for the redistricting case. The schedule provided twelve days for a decision to be reached and the legislature to redraw districts if the maps are not upheld. By state law, the legislature is required to have at least fourteen days to draw new districts if existing ones are struck down by a court.
H605, 2022 Primary Date, passed the Senate and House with a vote of 26-17 and 69-50, respectively. The new date for primary elections would be June 7.
